ALTIFORM® - COMPRESSION INFORMATION
The need for graduated compression stockings and how they work
In the lower leg blood flows from superficial veins into deep veins. This movement is assisted by the calf muscle, which acts as a pump, and one-way valves in the veins.
If the veins or valves become damaged, blood tends to collect in the lower part of the limb causing tired legs, varicose veins or, in the worst cases, venous leg ulcers.
Graduated compression stockings provide the required pressure to help the blood move back up the limb. They provide greatest compression at the ankle with gradually reducing pressure up the leg. This pressure profile improves blood flow reducing the effects of these conditions.
Continuous use of graduated compression is important in the prevention of leg ulcer recurrence. In one study a recurrence rate of 69% at one year was recorded in patients with newly healed ulcers, emphasising the need to continue the use of compression stockings (2).
